INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION : E VOLO 2012
LOCATION : New York
YEAR : 2011-2012
CLIENT : E VOLO
DESCRIPTION : RUNNING … FROM EARTH ... TO HEAVEN
The idea of being able to practice sports in our city, sometimes megalopolis, has become an increasingly felt need because of the diminishing open and recreational spaceswhere practice simple ones such as running. Some times the distance of sports facilities, parks and all the other places for practice prevents people living in the city from spending some relaxing hours doing their favorite sports, maybe on the outside instead of closed places as many times managers, employees and practitioners are forced to do. Hence the idea of replacing intricate knit streets and highways with new ones, which we call "the ways of sport." The latter, set up new roads that have green slope and variable angles in order to simulate country routes, running or cycling tracks, depending on the elevation you are inside the skyscraper and that will slowly guide you to the top of the building, where you will flow through the clouds, suspended in the sky and admiring everything from the skyline of New York, Paris or Berlin. The entire structure consists of two entities that suddenly rises almost to challenge the infinity of the sky, being at the same time rooted to the ground. They extend in a sinuous and winding shape wrapping the surrounding vegetation, almost creating a more secure environment and atmosphere. It’s from these "caves of light" that the trails rise from the earth to the immensity of the sky. Thus the principal aim of this project is to attempt to integrate as well the smaller sports facilities , which in many modern skyscrapers are already present, a system of pedestrian and cycle paths that enhance and invite to climb on top. Thanks to this articulated system of transversal crossings between the two buildings, visitors and those who work there will be able to move freely between the various plans and therefore also avoid the use of the elevator, encouraging a healthier lifestyle .The morphology of the structure has been designed entirely in concrete, not a simple and conventional but a partially transparent one. On the outer surface there’s a film of photovoltaic cells that can produce electricity for the entire building and at the same time allows to filter the amount of natural light necessary for the performance of various activities .As an additional measure the terraces, with vegetation and direct ventilation with the exterior, function as a natural system of refrigeration and solar protection. In the same way, the surrounding trees captures breezes which together with the crossed ventilation of the dwellings will contribute to the improvement of the building thermal conditions.
For an ideal sustainable construction it is advisable the use of recyclable materials from the site, as well as reducing the generation of waste during the building process, which will mean lower energy cost and low CO2. Likewise all materials in this project will be experimented and first quality.
